Dangerous Breeds of Dogs

While there are many factors that contribute to a dog's behavior, including training, social-ization, and individual temperament, some breeds are more frequently associated with severe attacks and fatalities. It's important to note that any dog can bite, and responsible ownership is the most critical factor in preventing incidents.

Based on fatal dog bite statistics and a dog's physical characteristics, here are some breeds that are often identified as being among the most dangerous:

Breeds with a high number of reported fatal attacks:

  • Pit Bull-type dogs: This is a broad category that includes several breeds like the American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier. They are consistently at the top of the list for fatal attacks. While they are known for their loyalty and affectionate nature with their families, their history as fighting and hunting dogs, coupled with their strong jaws, means that when they do attack, the consequences can be severe.

Rottweilers: With a powerful build and a history as working dogs and guard dogs, Rottweilers are known for their protective instincts. They are frequently involved in fatal attacks, second only to pit bull-type dogs in many studies. Proper training and socialization are essential for this breed to manage their protective nature.
  • German Shepherds: Used by law enforcement and the military for their intelligence and physical capabilities, German Shepherds have a strong prey drive and can be territorial. They are often cited in statistics for fatal attacks.

  • Wolf-Dog Hybrids: As the name suggests, these are a mix of a domestic dog and a wolf. They can have unpredictable and erratic behavior due to their close genetic link to a wild animal.

  • Siberian Huskies: Originally bred as sled dogs, Huskies have a high prey drive and need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. Their predatory instincts can, on rare occasions, lead to serious attacks.

Breeds with the strongest bite force (measured in pounds per square inch or PSI):
  • Kangal: This Turkish breed is renowned for having the strongest bite force of any dog, with an estimated PSI of over 700. They were bred to protect livestock from large predators like wolves and bears.

  • Cane Corso: A large Italian mastiff, the Cane Corso has a powerful bite and was bred for various tasks, including guarding property and hunting wild boar.

  • Dogue de Bordeaux/English Mastiff: These are massive dogs with huge heads and powerful jaws, resulting in a strong bite force.

  • Rottweiler: In addition to the number of fatal attacks, Rottweilers are also on the list for their strong bite force, which contributes to the severity of their bites.

It is crucial to remember that these statistics do not mean that these breeds are inherently "bad." A dog's behavior is more a reflection of its training, environment, and relationship with its owner than it is of its breed.

They are known as man’s best friends but just how true is this? Dogs are faithful and loyal friends when they are trained properly to heed the voice of their owner. It may come as a shock but dogs are territorial animals and if their behaviour is left unchecked, they can cause a lot of harm to people around them.

Like all living things, dogs have different breeds and species with their peculiar characteristics. The golden retriever for example is a large dog that can be a loyal and faithful companion. Without training, however, they can be vicious and Dangerous. Before settling for a family dog as a pet or for security reasons, learn their characteristics so you can get one most suited for your needs. Without further ado, let’s dive into the different dog species in no particular order.
